CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide

CertainTeed bathroom remodeling in Miami typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 for a full replacement, and we stock CertainTeed-compatible waterproofing membranes, backer boards, and finishing systems on every bathroom truck. Most Miami homeowners discover their CertainTeed bathroom system is failing when they spot bubbling vinyl wallpaper near the shower, soft drywall around the tub surround, or a musty smell that persists after cleaning - all signs that the waterproofing layer behind the tile or surround has compromised.

Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed’s bathroom product line centers on the Ceramic Tile Underlayment (CTU) system, the PermaBase Cement Board series, and the Restoration Millwork PVC trim boards used for wainscoting and moisture-resistant finishing. The CTU system was common in South Florida builds from the late 1990s through roughly 2015, often paired with their Greenboard moisture-resistant drywall in areas that should have received cement board. To identify what you’re working with, look for the CertainTeed stamp on the backer board edge (visible if you remove a vent cover or outlet plate), or check for the gray-faced PermaBase versus the lighter Greenboard.

The OEM-versus-aftermarket question matters less with CertainTeed bathroom systems than with, say, roofing or siding. PermaBase is actually a national standard cement board manufactured to ASTM C1325; what varies is the installation detail - the seam tape, the waterproofing membrane (RedGard, Hydro Ban, or CertainTeed’s own system), and whether the installer used a vapor barrier behind the board. We source PermaBase direct from CertainTeed distribution in Medley when the job spec calls for it, but we’ve also installed equivalent cement boards from USG and James Hardie when the customer wants a price option and the warranty permits. The compatibility gotcha in Miami’s climate: Greenboard was approved for “limited water exposure” areas under old Florida code, and many 2000s-era bathrooms used it behind tub surrounds where cement board was actually required. We find this mismatch in roughly one of every three Coral Gables and Pinecrest bathrooms we open up.

Signs Your CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

Signs Your CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
  • Tile or surround loosening near the tub lip. The cement board or Greenboard behind has absorbed moisture and swelled, breaking the thinset bond. In Miami’s humidity, this accelerates once the waterproofing membrane cracks at the tub-to-wall joint.
  • Discolored grout or caulk that reappears within weeks of cleaning. This usually means water is migrating behind the finish layer through a failed waterproofing barrier, carrying mold spores with it. The CertainTeed CTU system relies on a continuous membrane; any gap at the seam tape or corner detail becomes a channel.
  • Soft or spongy drywall near vanity plumbing. Greenboard handles humidity poorly when the protective paper facing is compromised by a pipe escutcheon or repeated condensation. We see this often in Miami Beach condos where the original install used Greenboard instead of PermaBase behind the vanity.
  • Musty odor with no visible leak. The waterproofing layer has failed at a penetration (shower valve, tub spout, or niche) and water is collecting in the wall cavity. CertainTeed’s membrane systems require proper lapping at penetrations; installer error here is common and invisible until demolition.
  • Restoration Millwork trim warping or pulling from the wall. PVC trim is dimensionally stable, but if it was fastened through moisture-damaged substrate, the fasteners lose purchase. This is a tell that the problem is deeper than the trim itself.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range in Miami
Full bathroom remodel (CertainTeed-compatible system) $10,620 - $33,040
Small bathroom remodel $5,900 - $14,160
Walk-in shower installation (new membrane, cement board, tile-ready) $5,310 - $14,160
Tub-to-shower conversion $4,130 - $11,800
Shower replacement (wet area only) $3,540 - $10,030
Bathroom vanity installation $945 - $3,540

The range depends on three factors: how far the moisture damage extends beyond the visible finish (we’ve opened showers in Coconut Grove to find studs rotted back to the exterior block), whether the plumbing rough-in needs relocation, and the finish level - a porcelain tile shower with a linear drain runs toward the upper end, a fiberglass surround toward the lower. Every quote we deliver is a flat written price with line-item scope before work starts. Under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, that number does not change unless you sign a change order. Our bathroom work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right. The documented photo record from demolition through final walkthrough is included, not optional.

There is one safe check a homeowner can make: remove the escutcheon plates around your shower valve and tub spout, and look for staining or soft material on the substrate behind. If you see clean, dry cement board or intact membrane, the problem may be surface-only. But once you open a wall in a moisture-damaged bathroom, you’re committed to a full rebuild of that wet area - and the mistakes we see from partial DIY repairs are expensive to undo. The most common: installing new tile over compromised substrate, trapping moisture deeper; or using “waterproof” drywall where cement board and a liquid membrane are code-required in Miami-Dade.

The safety issue here is not immediate injury but long-term health exposure - mold colonization in wall cavities, structural rot, and the cost of a second demolition when the first repair fails. We carry CertainTeed-compatible PermaBase, seam tape, and waterproofing membrane on every bathroom truck. Call (786) 321-4970 to schedule your free estimate. We’ll open the wall enough to assess the substrate condition, photograph what we find, and deliver a written price before any work proceeds.
