The Berkshire ships in 6-foot and 8-foot panel widths with either 5-inch or 7-inch picket profiles; the Sentinel uses 48-inch, 60-inch, or 72-inch rail kits with bracket spacing at 72 inches on center. To identify your system, check the inside face of the end post for a stamped date code and series mark, or measure the wall thickness of the bottom rail: Berkshire is 0.135-inch cellular PVC, Sentinel is 0.040-inch aluminum with a polyester powder coat.

We source OEM Tamko rails, posts, and brackets through regional distributors in Hialeah and Fort Lauderdale, though for discontinued color matches (Berkshire’s “Sandalwood” was dropped in 2019) we fabricate compatible rails from Westech or Bufftech stock and disclose the substitution on the written quote. Tamko’s Berkshire carries a limited lifetime warranty against fading, but that covers color shift, not dimensional stability. When we see 2-inch or more bow in a 6-foot span, the rail extrusion has lost structural memory and needs replacement.
• Gate hardware seizes or sags. The standard Tamko gate kit uses zinc-plated steel hinges; in coastal Miami, we’ve found these corrode through in 24-36 months. We upgrade to 316 stainless steel on every gate we touch, and we document the hardware spec on the quote so there’s no question what you’re paying for.
• Bottom rail cracks at bracket points. This is the Berkshire’s known weak point: the rail wall is thinnest at the insertion point for the aluminum bracket, and ground contact plus thermal cycling stress-concentrates there. We see this most in homes west of the Turnpike where afternoon soil temperatures run 15 degrees hotter than coastal properties.
• Aluminum pickets rattle in high wind. On Sentinel systems, this means the nylon grommets have UV-degraded and fallen out. It’s a $3 part, but without it the picket wears the rail slot and you’ll need both. We stock the grommets on our trucks; most crews don’t carry them.
