Cambria Bathroom Remodeling: The Miami Owner’s Guide

Homeowners usually call us after noticing water staining at the vanity-to-wall joint, a crack spreading from an undermount sink cutout, or grout failure in a shower surround that was “upgraded” with Cambria but installed without proper waterproofing behind it. In Coral Gables last March, we removed a 4-year-old Cambria shower surround that looked pristine on the face but had no vapor barrier behind the cement board. The studs were soft. The homeowner had no idea until the baseboard swelled.

Which Cambria Models This Applies To

Cambria’s quartz slabs are non-porous and uniform across all designs, but bathroom applications require specific handling that kitchen installers often miss. The Brittanicca, Torquay, and White Cliff lines are the most common in Miami bathrooms, though we have installed over 40 Cambria designs locally. The critical spec is thickness: 2 cm for vertical applications (tub surrounds, shower walls) and 3 cm for horizontal load-bearing surfaces (vanity tops, bench seats). A 2 cm slab on a vanity over a 36-inch span will flex and eventually crack at the sink cutout.

Every Cambria slab carries a printed batch code on the protective film edge. We photograph this during template, match it to the slab at fabrication, and include the batch documentation in your project file. Cambria is a natural quartz product with batch variation. “OEM” here means factory-certified fabrication with CNC-cut sink openings and polished edges to Cambria’s spec. Aftermarket fabrication shops in Miami-Dade sometimes skip the vibration-polish step, leaving a edge that looks acceptable but will show water spots within 18 months. We fabricate in-house with a Brembana CNC and polish to 400-grit minimum.

Signs Your Cambria Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

• Darkening at the sink-to-slab joint. The silicone seal has failed, allowing water into the particleboard or plywood substrate. In Miami’s humidity, this swells the substrate and transfers stress to the quartz. We see this most in homes near Biscayne Bay where salt air accelerates seal degradation.
• Hairline crack radiating from the faucet deck or sink rim. The undermount sink clips were over-torqued, or the substrate was not leveled before slab placement. Cambria will not warranty installation errors, and the crack will propagate.
• Grout cracking in a Cambria shower surround. Cambria slabs in wet areas should be installed with minimal grout joints (1/16 inch) using epoxy grout. Cement grout in a steam shower will fail in 8-14 months. We removed a full Surround in Pinecrest where the previous installer used sanded grout and no waterproofing membrane.
• Slab “popping” or sounding hollow when tapped. The adhesive bond failed, usually from inadequate surface prep or wrong adhesive for the substrate. Cambria recommends 100% solids epoxy or polyurethane adhesive; mastic will crystallize and release.
• Etching or dull spots that do not clean off. True etching on quartz is rare and indicates exposure to hydrofluoric acid (some tile cleaners) or prolonged contact with nail polish remover. More often, the “dull” area is residue from a failed topical sealer applied by a previous owner. Cambria never needs sealing.

The range depends on four factors: slab selection (design tier, Jumbo vs. Standard format), plumbing relocation needs, whether we are removing existing tile or solid surface, and the condition of the wall substrate behind it. DIY or Call Us?

There is no safe DIY path for a full Cambria bathroom installation. The slabs weigh 18-22 pounds per square foot in 3 cm. A 60-inch double vanity top is 150+ pounds, brittle, and requires two experienced handlers with suction cups and a clear path. We have repaired three homeowner drops in the last two years. Each cost $4,000-$7,000 in replacement slab and re-template.

What you can check: the batch code on your existing slab (photograph it), the condition of the silicone joint at the wall, and whether your vanity cabinet is level with a 4-foot level. If the cabinet is out of level by more than 1/8 inch over 4 feet, the slab will stress-crack. That is fixable before we arrive, or we handle it during prep.

What goes wrong with DIY: improper substrate prep, wrong adhesive, no expansion gap at walls, and the near-certainty of dropping or cracking the slab during placement.
