Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT’s fence line breaks into two series that handle South Florida’s salt air differently. The PGT Vinyl Privacy series uses 5-inch square posts with wall thickness of .150 inches, while the PGT Aluminum Estate series runs 2-inch square posts with powder-coated 6063-T6 alloy. The label is stamped on the inside face of the post cap, or on a small aluminum tag under the bottom rail bracket. If the tag’s gone, measure the post wall: vinyl under .130 inches is typically a competitor’s import, not PGT.

We’ve found the OEM PGT rail bracket holds up better than aftermarket equivalents in Miami’s UV exposure. The aftermarket versions save $8-$12 per bracket but the nylon insert degrades in 18-24 months here. For gate hinges, we use PGT’s stainless steel kit or a Marine-grade equivalent from a vetted supplier, never the zinc-plated hardware that corrodes at the hinge barrel within two wet seasons.

Signs Your PGT Fence Installation Is Failing

• Post wobble at the concrete footing. In Miami’s sandy loam, especially in Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay, the post base rots or the concrete footing cracks from root intrusion. The post leans toward the failed side and the gate won’t latch square anymore.
• Rail pull-out from the bracket. The vinyl rail tab cracks where it meets the bracket, usually from thermal expansion stress after 6-8 years of 90-degree daily swings. You’ll see a gap between rail and post, or the rail drops slightly on one end.
• Gate sag and drag. The gate frame goes out of square when the diagonal tension cable loosens or the hinge post settles. The gate bottom scrapes the deck or pavers, and the latch misses the strike plate by half an inch or more.
• Panel bowing between posts. Vinyl panels in direct south or west exposure develop a permanent curve toward the sun. This is material fatigue, not wind damage, and it won’t pull straight with adjustment.
• Hardware seizure or corrosion. Gate hinges grind, latch bolts stick, or screws back out with white aluminum oxide crusting the threads. Salt air accelerates this; inland Miami sees it in 5-7 years, coastal Key Biscayne and Miami Beach in 3-4.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s no high-tension danger in fence work, but there’s a precision problem. An owner can safely check if a post is loose by rocking it at the base, or confirm rail pull-out by lifting the rail end. What goes wrong in DIY is the footing: a post set in dry-pack concrete without proper drainage fails again in 18 months, and in Miami’s high water table, a 24-inch depth often isn’t enough.
