Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT builds several distinct product lines, and the part you need depends on which one is on your house. The WinGuard aluminum and vinyl series use different roller assemblies - the aluminum frames take a heavier-duty tandem roller with a 1-1/4 inch wheel, while WinGuard vinyl uses a lighter single-wheel roller at 1 inch. The Eze-Breeze porch enclosure systems have their own track and spline hardware that doesn’t interchange with WinGuard. The PGT Architectural Systems line, common in Coral Gables and Pinecrest builds from 2015 forward, uses European-style multi-point locks that require exact matching by backset and faceplate width.

Check the etched logo in the glass corner or the sticker on the frame jamb for the series name and manufacturing date. After 2018, PGT shifted some roller specifications on vinyl horizontal rollers - an OEM PGT roller from 2016 won’t necessarily seat correctly in a 2020 frame. We carry both generations and can tell the difference by the axle bracket geometry in about ten seconds. For locks and keepers, we stock PGT factory parts and select aftermarket equivalents where the spec matches - the aftermarket rollers we use are rated to the same 100,000-cycle test standard, but we won’t substitute on multi-point lock bodies where tolerances are tighter.

Signs Your PGT Windows & Doors Is Failing

• The sash drops or won’t stay open. This usually means the balance system or coil spring has lost tension. In Miami’s salt air, we’ve seen coil springs corrode and fail in 6-8 years instead of the 15-year design life - the window feels fine in dry season, then won’t hold position once humidity climbs.
• The door drags or sticks in the track. Rollers flatten or their axles seize. On PGT sliding glass doors facing Biscayne Bay or the ocean, sand and salt accelerate wear; the door gets heavier to move, then the handle mechanism starts cracking from the extra force.
• You feel air movement around a closed window. The weatherstripping compresses permanently or the pile seal pulls away from the fin. PGT’s fin-seal design works well until the rubber hardens - after that, no amount of closing harder fixes it.
• Water pools on the sill after rain. The weep holes are clogged, or the sill track cap is cracked. In Miami’s afternoon storms, blocked drainage backs up into the track and can overflow into the wall - we’ve found this behind baseboards in Coconut Grove homes where the cap looked fine from above but was fractured underneath.
• The lock tongue doesn’t fully engage. The keeper has shifted or the lock mechanism internals have worn. On impact-rated units, an unengaged lock is a failed impact test - the glass may hold, but the frame can separate under pressure.

Don’t attempt to remove a PGT impact-rated sash yourself. These units are heavy - often 80-120 pounds for a 36×72 inch window - and the balance system is under tension.
